The British Standards Institution (BSI), one of the world’s leading organizations setting standards, has released its new guidance document, which raises standards in the field of food defense to a new level. Titled“PAS 96:2026 – Food Safety: Guidance on Protection and Prevention Against Intentional Acts,”this document provides a comprehensive roadmap for addressing malicious acts that could target the food and beverage industry.

A More Resilient Supply Chain Against Deliberate Threats

Safety in the food industry now extends beyond issues related to hygiene, accidents, or negligence. The newly published PAS 96:2026 guideline focuses on enhancing the resilience of food and beverage businesses against “intentional threats” such as sabotage, cyberattacks, economic adulteration, or terrorism.

The guide provides a detailed explanation for all actors in the supply chain—from manufacturers to distributors—on how to identify potential security vulnerabilities and how to mitigate these risks at their source.

Consumer Health and Brand Reputation Are Safeguarded

The updated guide is expected to serve as a key reference for companies competing in the global food market and seeking to safeguard their operations. Experts emphasize that integrating PAS 96:2026 into business operations will not only provide stronger protection for consumer health but also help prevent potential reputational damage that brands might face during crises.
